CS373 Fall 2021: Zhongyi Wang

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Fushun, Liaoning where is the northeast part of China. It could reach 0 degrees around January.

What high school did you attend?

I attended NO.10 high school in the city where I grew up and moved to the United States after I graduated from high school.

What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

My favorite extracurricular activity in high school is basketball. I always played basketball with my friends after school. Sometimes I spent more time on basketball than my homework.

Why did you come to UT?

After I decided to move to Texas, I did some research and found that UT has the best CS major in Texas. I love to challenge myself to get into the best CS major university.

Why are you majoring in CS?

The first thing I know about CS is that the students with CS majors get a pretty good income after they graduated from school. Then I went to ACC and took 2 CS classes, I found CS to be very interesting and I really like it. It is different from the other natural science majors. I do not have to memorize all the formulas to solve the questions. Then I decide to choose CS to be my major.

Why are you in this class?

I want to be a software engineer after graduating next year. This class will teach me how to be a software engineer and may help me find an internship for the summer. I took OOP in the spring and enjoy Professor Downing’s class, that is why I did not take the summer SWE class.

What are your expectations of this class?

I am expecting to know what software engineers need to do for their jobs. I also want to learn all the skills to be a software engineer, like python and SQL databases.

How much Javascript/Python/SQL/Web programming do you already know?

I learned basic Javascript and Python by myself during the summer. I do not have any SQL and Web programming experience at all, but I am ready and excited to learn all the new stuff.

How did you like the first lectures?

I like the first lecture a lot. I read the syllabus before the class and was really confused and worried about the new grade system. After the first lecture, I found the new grade system is not that bad.

How did you feel about the cold calling?

I was scared when I heard the cold calling for the first time in the 2021 Spring OOP class. After the semester was over, I found cold calling is a good tool to help students focus on the lecture during class time. Professor Downing is really nice and patient with the student during the cold calling.

What made you happy this week?

I was happy that I get enough sleep during the weekend. It set me up to get ready for the new semester.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

I learned 2021 Web Development Bootcamp on https://www.udemy.com/home/my-courses/learning/ during the summer. It is really a good class for web development.
